My Cage

When this poem was turned into a song and recorded on a CD and my boyfriend heard it for the first time, he almost left me. He also refused to listen to the other 13 songs on the CD. He assumed it was about him. And that, my friends, is the power of poetry combined with music.

MY CAGE

My cage has no walls but it traps me just the same

You keep me here by guilt; you keep me here by blame

But someday I will fly far far from here

When I get the strength to let you go

When I no longer need you near

My cage has no locks has no keys has no chains

But I hear you doubting me in my brain in my brain

If you let me out of site you think I'll slip away

But the tighter you hold onto me the more I cannot stay

And I'll fly far from here

Like an eagle with new wings I'll escape your world of fear

And I'll fly

The twisted thing is that I think I love you still

But I just have to get away with a passport and a ticket on a flight to Bombay

And I'll fly far from here

I think I need you like a drowning man needs a weight

I realize there is quicksand beyond the gate

You'll never let me go, I'll gotta to plan an escape

Cuz your love is all around me like barbed wire and duct tape
